Hertz is the only company we found with a depot at the Devonport ferry terminal, listed at The Esplanade. It publishes a short morning window: 07:00 to 08:30, Monday to Saturday, closed on Sunday. If you can't make that window, Hertz and Thrifty also share a city depot at 26 Oldaker Street, and all four companies work from Devonport Airport.

Devonport depots keep short hours, and Sunday is the hardest day. The Hertz ferry terminal desk is closed. Going by published hours, Budget at the airport opens 08:30 to 13:00, the Hertz and Thrifty city depot opens 12:30 to 16:00, and Avis, Hertz and Thrifty at the airport open from 13:00.
On Saturday, Hertz and Thrifty close the airport desk at 11:30 and Avis at 12:00. Budget's Devonport Airport page gives after-hours return instructions: a drop box on the airport entrance road, available until 21:00 daily. The same page also places its counter in the Spirit of Tasmania terminal, so confirm with Budget where the drop box is. That covers returns only. We didn't find after-hours pick-up instructions on the four companies' pages, so if your ship or flight lands outside these hours, confirm with the company before you book.
