The comparison
Compare where each company hands over the keys.
Ordered by how many Tasmanian pick-up cities a company lists on its own site, then alphabetically, with the booking agent and peer-to-peer listings last. Nobody pays to be listed or to move up.

A tick means the company's own site, linked in that row, lists a pick-up in that city. “To confirm” means its site mentions the city but not a depot there (no details, a paid handover or on request), so ask before you book. “Sleeps” shows the van sizes each company names on its own site; “Ask” means it doesn't publish them. Aussie Campervans books vans from other companies, so its ticks show where it can arrange a pick-up.

This is Tasmanian Campervan Hire's published rate card: a handy benchmark, not a market average. July and August aren't on the card. The major brands price by date and demand, so run a live search and compare them side by side for your dates. Before we publish a wider range, we'll log the same search (one 2-berth van, a 10-day round trip from Hobart) on three dates across the seasons and print each result with the date we ran it.

Before you choose a company
Choose your pick-up city before you choose a van.

South · Hobart
18 rental companies hand over vans in or near Hobart, several of them at a shared depot in Cambridge beside the airport. A round trip back to the same depot keeps one-way fees off your bill.
See Hobart options ↑
North · Launceston
In Launceston, pick up from LeisureRent, AutoRent and Wombat Campers. With fewer vans in the north, lock one in early or plan to collect in Hobart instead.
Compare Launceston depots ↑
North-west · Devonport
AutoRent lists Devonport Airport and a Spirit of Tasmania pick-up. The ferry moves to its new Spirit Quay terminal for the first sailings of the new ships on 31 October 2026, so confirm the handover address.
AutoRent details ↑Bringing a mainland rental across?
Spirit of Tasmania carries campervans, but it recommends checking with the rental company before you book because restrictions may apply. Britz, for example, needs permission before any ferry trip in a 2WD camper. Get that permission in writing before you book the crossing.

Shower and toilet on board, in sizes for two up to six people. Worth it for families or for nights at campgrounds without amenities.
Rented by: Maui, Britz, Tassie Motor Shacks, LeisureRent
A regular car or AWD SUV with a tent, bedding and a stove. Handy if a large van makes you nervous.
Rented by: Explora

What the vans look like

On the road
Check overnight parking rules and the parks pass you'll need.
Four rules that shape where you stop each night. Each one links to the Parks and Wildlife Service page it comes from.

At reserves such as Bay of Fires, camping is allowed only in designated campgrounds. Several are free for campervans, including Friendly Beaches (Isaacs Point, 14-night limit) and the Bay of Fires campgrounds.
Parks and Wildlife Service: Bay of Fires campingYou need a valid parks pass to enter Tasmania's national parks, Freycinet included.
Parks and Wildlife Service: Friendly BeachesRichardsons Beach and the other Freycinet campgrounds switch to the Parks Online Booking System on 3 November 2026. Until it goes live, new bookings for stays from that date are paused (as of 23 October 2026). The powered sites fit campervans up to 18 feet long.
Parks and Wildlife Service: Richardsons BeachRangers ask drivers to avoid reserve roads at night where possible, because native animals share them.

Here is how we build the table. Read the full method.
We tick a city only when the company's own site lists a pick-up there, and link that page in the row. If its site mentions the city without a depot there, we mark it “To confirm”.
Ferry permission and kilometre limits come from the company's terms or a source that quotes them.
We print a rate only when a company publishes it, with the date we checked. Everything else is a live search for your dates.
Each check is dated. This table was last checked on .
FAQ
It depends on your dates, the vehicle and the trip length. One published example: Tasmanian Campervan Hire lists its 2-berth pop-top from $110 a day (off-peak, 21+ days) to $170 a day (peak or April, shortest hires), insurance included (checked 23 October 2026). The major brands price by date and demand, so search your dates and compare the full price, including any one-way fee and the cost of reducing the insurance excess.
It depends first on where you land. Fly into Hobart and you can choose between 18 brands. Land in Launceston and you can pick up from LeisureRent, AutoRent and Wombat Campers; AutoRent also lists Devonport Airport and a Spirit of Tasmania pick-up. After that, match the vehicle to your group: a 2-berth campervan suits most couples, and a motorhome makes sense if you want a shower and toilet on board.
No. At Parks and Wildlife Service reserves such as Bay of Fires and Mayfield Bay, camping is allowed only in designated areas, and councils set their own rules for overnight parking in towns. Some good sites cost nothing, though. Friendly Beaches (Isaacs Point) in Freycinet National Park and the Bay of Fires campgrounds are free, take campervans and need no booking. Check the signs when you arrive.
Hobart gives you the most room to hunt for a deal: 18 rental companies compete for your booking there. The cheapest quote still depends on your dates and vehicle, so compare the same dates side by side. Returning the van to the depot where you collected it avoids a one-way fee, which many companies charge.
A campervan covers transport and a bed, so compare its total with car hire plus a room for the same number of nights. The more free or low-cost campgrounds you use, the better the campervan looks. There is also a middle option: Explora rents cars and SUVs out of Hobart with a full camping kit packed in.
Yes, with some companies. LeisureRent lets you pick up and drop off in Hobart or Launceston, and AutoRent lists airport pick-ups in both cities. Check the quote for a one-way fee before you pay.
The ship carries campervans and motorhomes, but the rental company decides whether its vehicle may travel. Spirit of Tasmania recommends checking with the rental company before booking because restrictions may apply, and Britz, for one, needs permission before any ferry trip in a 2WD camper. Get that permission in writing before you book the crossing, or pick up your van in Tasmania instead.
Only if your rental terms allow it. Britz, for example, lists Bruny Island as permission-only for its 2WD campers, and other companies set their own rules. Check the current terms, and ask at pick-up, before you go.
Many companies hold a bond on your card, often equal to the excess: the amount you pay towards a covered damage claim. You can usually pay a daily fee to reduce it. Some damage is excluded altogether (ferry damage is a common example), and then you can be liable for the full cost, so read the exclusions. If you plan to rely on travel insurance or a credit card policy, confirm it covers campervan or motorhome hire excess.
Yes, for the national parks. Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service requires a valid parks pass to enter them, Freycinet included. Freycinet campground bookings move to the new Parks Online Booking System on 3 November 2026, and new bookings for stays from that date are paused until it goes live. Friendly Beaches needs no booking.
Visitors can drive on a current overseas licence. If it isn't in English, carry an International Driving Permit or an accredited English translation as well. Minimum driver age is set by each company, so check it before you book (Explora, for example, welcomes drivers under 25).
