How we compare
Every fact we publish comes from the rental company's own site or terms, carries the date we checked it, and links the page we checked. This is the method behind each page.

1. Depots from the company's own site
A city gets a tick only when the rental company's own site lists a pick-up there, with an address or a named location. If the company's site mentions a city without a depot, for example a paid handover or pick-up on request, we mark it “To confirm”. Third-party guides never earn a tick. Each row links the pages we used, so you can check them yourself.
Our Tasmania comparison compares 19 rental companies, from national brands to local specialists, alongside booking agents and peer-to-peer platforms.
2. Rules from rental terms
Rules that change a trip, such as taking the vehicle on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry, kilometre limits or minimum hire length, come from the company's own terms and conditions, or from a source that quotes them directly. When a company's terms don't say, we leave the cell blank rather than guess.
3. Only dated, published prices
We print a rate only when a company publishes a rate card on its own site, and we show the date we read it and link the card. We never estimate a price or average quotes. For every other company, the “Check price” button takes you to a search for your dates, where the company or booking partner sets the price.
4. Badges follow written rules
“Best for” badges aren't opinions or paid placements. Each one is given only when a company meets the rule below:
- Most pick-up cities: Its own site lists a pick-up in all three cities: Hobart, Launceston and Devonport. The top row of the table.
- Best for north–south trips: Its own site offers pick-up and drop-off in both Hobart and Launceston.
- Best for families: Its own site lists vehicles that sleep six.
- Published rates: Publishes its daily rates on its own site, so you can see the price before you search.
- Best for going electric: Rents battery-electric campervans, with charging included in the hire (idle fees excluded).
- Best for car + camping: Rents cars and SUVs with a full camping kit packed in, for anyone who would rather not drive a van.
5. Order and independence
The order follows the data: rental companies first, then booking agents, then peer-to-peer platforms. Within each group, companies with more confirmed pick-up cities come first, then alphabetical order. Commissions never decide who is listed, where they appear or which badge they get. Companies can't pay to be included or to move up. How we earn is explained in our affiliate disclosure.
6. Official sources for everything else
Travel facts come from official bodies: climate from the Bureau of Meteorology's station records, ferry rules from Spirit of Tasmania, and national park passes from Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania. Each one is linked where it appears.
7. Dates and updates
Every comparison shows the date it was last checked, and the current Tasmania table was checked on . When we recheck a company, we update the facts and the date together.
8. Corrections
If a depot has moved, a company has closed or a rule has changed, tell us. We check the report against the company's own site and, if it holds, update the page and its date. Rental companies can use the same form to send corrections about their own listing.
