The comparison
Compare car hire by pick-up city
Choose the city you land in first. Hobart has the widest choice; in the north-west only the big brands have depots.
Some links earn us a commission. It never changes the order.
| City | Companies | Desk in or at the airport | Off-airport depot | In town |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hobart | 15 | Hertz, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, SIXT, Europcar, Bargain Car Rentals, Drive Car Hire and Redspot | East Coast Car Rentals, Apex Car Rentals, Alice Car Rental, YesDrive and Astra Car Rentals | Hertz, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, SIXT, Bargain Car Rentals, Ace Rental Cars, Drive Car Hire and Redspot |
| Launceston | 12 | Hertz, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, SIXT, Europcar and Redspot | Bargain Car Rentals, East Coast Car Rentals, Apex Car Rentals, Ace Rental Cars and Drive Car Hire | Hertz, Avis, Budget and Thrifty |
| Devonport | 4 | Hertz, Avis, Budget and Thrifty | None listed | Hertz and Thrifty; ferry terminal: Hertz |
| BurnieAirport at Wynyard | 3 | Hertz and Avis | None listed | Hertz and Thrifty |
A company appears in a city only when its own site gives a depot address there; we read those pages on 25 October 2026. Pages for Launceston and Devonport are next. The Hobart page lists every depot with its address, hours and source.
Price
Cheapest car hire in Tasmania
None of these companies publishes a daily rate you can compare before searching, so we don't print one. The cheapest company is the one whose total comes back lowest for your dates. Four things move that total most:
- Driver age. Most set the minimum at 21 and charge drivers under 25 extra or limit them to smaller cars. East Coast Car Rentals publishes AUD 16.50 a day per under-25 driver at Launceston Airport; Bargain Car Rentals says it charges none.
- Excess. Compare what you would owe after damage and the daily price of reducing it.
- One-way fees. Check whether the quote adds a fee for dropping off in another city; we have not checked one-way fees. 12 companies have depots in both Hobart and Launceston.
- Airport pick-ups. Quote the same car at the terminal, at a shuttle depot and in town, and look for an airport charge in each total.
Flying in
Car hire at Tasmanian airports
Hobart Airport
At the airport: Hertz, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, SIXT, Europcar, Bargain Car Rentals, Drive Car Hire and Redspot. Off-airport depots nearby (check how you get there): East Coast Car Rentals, Apex Car Rentals, Alice Car Rental, YesDrive and Astra Car Rentals.
Launceston Airport
At the airport: Hertz, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, SIXT, Europcar and Redspot. Off-airport depots nearby (check how you get there): Bargain Car Rentals, East Coast Car Rentals, Apex Car Rentals, Ace Rental Cars and Drive Car Hire.
Devonport Airport
At the airport: Hertz, Avis, Budget and Thrifty.
Burnie (Wynyard) Airport
At the airport: Hertz and Avis.
North-west
Car hire in Burnie and the north-west
The north-west has the fewest options. In Burnie, the town depots belong to Hertz and Thrifty, both at 85 Mount Street, and Burnie's airport is at Wynyard, about 20 km away according to Hertz, where Hertz and Avis have desks. In Devonport, Hertz, Avis, Budget and Thrifty work from the airport, and Hertz also opens a desk at the ferry terminal from 07:00 to 08:30, Monday to Saturday.
Hours here are short, especially at weekends, so book ahead and check the depot hours on the company page before you plan a Sunday pick-up.
Bigger vehicles
Van, ute and 4WD hire
Avis lists commercial vehicles separately at its Hobart and Launceston depots. For a van or ute from another company, search the commercial class for your pick-up city and confirm the model in the quote. For a 4WD, Alice Car Rental's Hobart page sets a minimum driver age of 25, against 21 for its other cars; with other companies, check that a 4WD class is offered in the quote. Spirit of Tasmania
Your car on the Spirit of Tasmania vs hiring there
Taking a mainland hire car across only works if the company allows it, and several say no in writing. Hiring in Tasmania avoids the question: Hertz has a desk at the Devonport ferry terminal, and four big brands work from Devonport Airport.
Its terms say cars rented in Tasmania may only be driven in Tasmania.
Clause 7(g) of its terms rules out driving between mainland Australia and Tasmania.
Its FAQ says you can book a return crossing and take the rental car on the ferry.
Its FAQ answers "Can I take the car out of Tasmania?" with "No."
Its terms (3.19) allow the ferry to Tasmania, but its FAQ says the car may not enter or leave Tasmania.
Hertz, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, SIXT and Europcar don't state a ferry rule on the pages we read. Ask before you book. Spirit of Tasmania is moving its Devonport sailings to a new terminal, Spirit Quay Devonport, for its new ships, so confirm the handover address with the company.
Before you book
Rules: age, licence and excess
Drivers under 25 can only book some car groups, and fees may apply.
Drivers under 25 can only book some car groups; the fee is not published.
An under-25 fee applies; the amount is not published.
Its Hobart Airport page says there are no under-25 fees.
At Launceston Airport it publishes AUD 16.50 a day for each driver under 25; at Hobart it says a fee "may apply".
Extra charges for drivers under 25 "may apply".
A young renter surcharge applies to drivers aged 21 or under.
A daily under-25 fee applies (amount not published), small and mid-size cars only.
On an overseas licence, check the licence rules in the company's terms before you book; we have not verified them for every company. If the quote offers a daily fee to reduce the excess, read what the reduced cover excludes before you pay for it.
FAQ
Tasmania car hire FAQ
What is the best car rental company in Tasmania?
It depends on where you start. Hertz covers the most ground, with 9 locations across all 4 cities, including a desk at the Devonport ferry terminal. In Hobart you can choose from 15 companies, so compare depot location, hours and the under-25 and ferry rules before price.
Why is car hire so expensive in Tasmania?
We have not compared Tasmanian rates with other states, so we cannot say why base prices are what they are. Two things we did check can raise what you pay: several companies charge drivers under 25 extra or limit them to smaller cars, and several forbid taking their cars on the Spirit of Tasmania, so if you bring a mainland hire car across you may need to swap companies. When you get a quote, also look for the cost of reducing your damage excess, any one-way fee if you drop off in another city and any airport charge. We have not checked those on the companies' sites.
How much is car hire per day in Tasmania?
The companies we compare don't publish a fixed daily rate. Some advertise a "from" price, but the real figure only appears when you enter your dates, car size and the driver's age. Get two or three quotes for the same dates and compare the full total, extras included.
What is the cheapest company to rent a car from?
No single company is always cheapest; it changes with dates and demand. To find the lowest total, quote the same car at a terminal desk, an off-airport shuttle depot and a city depot, and check the under-25 fee and excess before you pay. Bargain Car Rentals, for example, says it charges no under-25 fee at Hobart Airport and Launceston Airport.
Can I take a hire car on the Spirit of Tasmania?
Check the company first. Bargain Car Rentals, East Coast Car Rentals and Drive Car Hire rule it out. Ace Rental Cars says you can book a return crossing with its car, and Redspot's terms and FAQ contradict each other. The large brands don't publish the rule on the pages we read, so ask before you book.
