Check the shuttle hours against your flight, and ask what happens if it lands late. Apex, for one, publishes no after-hours pick-up or return.
Price
Cheap car hire in Hobart
No company here publishes a fixed daily rate: you get a price when you enter dates. So the cheapest option is whichever total comes back lowest for your trip, and these are the things that move it.
- Your age. Most companies add a fee for drivers under 25 or limit them to smaller cars. Bargain Car Rentals says its Hobart Airport depot charges no under-25 fee, and Ace Rental Cars rents from 18 with a surcharge for drivers aged 21 or under.
- The excess. Compare the excess you would owe after damage and the daily cost of reducing it, not only the headline rate.
- Where you collect. Quote the same car at a terminal desk, a shuttle depot and a city depot, and look for any airport charge in the total.
- One-way trips. If you plan to return the car somewhere else, check the quote for a one-way fee; we have not checked those fees. If you need to finish in Launceston, see the one-way section.

Car hire in Hobart city
If you are staying in the CBD or arriving by bus, a city depot saves the trip to Cambridge. Harrington Street has the most choice: Ace Rental Cars (96 Harrington Street), Bargain Car Rentals (173 Harrington Street), Budget (122 Harrington Street), Drive Car Hire (92 Harrington Street), Hertz (96 Harrington Street), Thrifty (96 Harrington Street). Avis is at 2-4 Market Place, SIXT at 290 Argyle Street and Redspot at 67 Argyle Street.
City depots close earlier than the airport, and some barely open at weekends. SIXT's Argyle Street office publishes 08:00 to 12:00 every day, and Bargain's city depot opens on weekdays only. Plan your return time around the hours in the table.
Bigger vehicles
Van and 7-seater hire
Avis runs separate commercial vehicle listings at both of its Hobart depots, at the same addresses and hours as its cars. For a 7 or 8-seater, choose the people mover class when you search and check the model in the quote, because fleets differ from depot to depot.

Which car hire companies are inside Hobart Airport?
Budget, Europcar, Redspot and SIXT have a desk or kiosk in the terminal. Bargain Car Rentals has an office on the terminal forecourt, and Drive Car Hire describes its depot as part of the terminal precinct. Avis, Hertz and Thrifty list a depot at the airport without saying whether it is in the terminal. Alice Car Rental, Apex Car Rentals, Astra Car Rentals, East Coast Car Rentals and YesDrive are off the airport in Cambridge and run a shuttle.
Can I pick up a hire car in Hobart city?
Yes. 9 city depots belong to Ace Rental Cars, Avis, Bargain Car Rentals, Budget, Drive Car Hire, Hertz, Redspot, SIXT and Thrifty. Hertz, Thrifty and Ace share 96 Harrington Street, and Budget, Drive Car Hire and Bargain are a few doors along the same street.
